Getting organised in the kitchen - where to start

Organising your kitchen can be a daunting task - but follow my step by step guide to make it easier!

  1. Split the job up so its not such a big task. If you only have 1 hour spare go through your food, then the next time do your appliances. Make it realistic and managable so you have the most chance of success. It often takes me (a professional organiser) 1-2 days to organise a kitchen so remember these things do take time.

  2. Declutter - you can’t reorganise your kitchen without going through what you actually need and in turn what you don’t! This includes checking food for sell by as well as going through utensils and bakeware. Ask yourself if you have used this item in the last 2 years or if it could be donated instead. Also think about duplicates, yes you may need 3 of the same size containers but do you need 6?

  3. You cannot organise without taking everything out - its a fact. So if you want to tackle that over filling utensil drawer take it all out! Naturally once you put it back nicely it will be so much more organised!

  4. When making a plan - Zone off the kitchen. Try to space your food in one zone, dinnerware together etc. This makes it so much easier to stay on top of, and will ensure your new system will stay organised and not just get messy again after a few weeks.

  5. Measure up your spaces; you can’t go blind shopping just because a container looks nice, or a cutlery organiser is on offer - although its a bonus if it is ;) . Find out the width, depth and height of the shelves and drawers in your kitchen so you can get the right storage for the right space. Also think about getting the right storage for the right items, for instance, wipeable storage for under the sink, but you could go with a cotton storage basket for storing snacks.

Good luck and remember to tag me with your results @organisedbycharlotte.
